8 reasons your Joker Card is being declined — and exactly how to fix each one right now.

When you shop online, the merchant checks your name and billing address against the card issuer's records. If your card is not registered, this check fails and the payment is declined — even if you have enough money on the card.

Automated pumps are the #1 place Joker Cards get declined. Here's why and the easy workaround.
Automated pumps pre-authorize a large amount — often $150 or more — before you pump any gas. This pre-auth hold can exceed your card balance, causing an instant decline even if you only need $40 of gas.
Go inside the station and tell the attendant: "I'd like to put exactly $X on pump number Y using this prepaid card." The attendant will charge only that exact amount — no pre-auth problem.
Restaurants hold extra for tips. Hotels hold for incidentals. Both can cause your card to decline.
Many restaurants add a tip estimate (15-20%) to the pre-authorization. If your $50 meal triggers a $60 hold but you only have $55, the card declines.
Fix: Make sure your balance is at least 25% more than your bill. Or pay the tip separately in cash.
Hotels often place large incidental holds ($100–$500) on top of your room cost. Prepaid cards are generally not recommended for hotel stays.
Fix: Use a credit card for hotel check-in. Use your Joker Card for other purchases during your stay.
Shopping at a European website? Joker Cards are limited to $75 CAD per transaction and $225 CAD lifetime with EU merchants. Split your order or use a different payment method for EU sites.
Always check your balance before purchasing. Your total including tax, shipping, and any service fees must be less than your card balance. Use our balance guide to check first.
Joker Cards should not be used for subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify, etc.) or any recurring billing. The card may work the first time but will fail on subsequent charges. Use a credit card for subscriptions.
Check the expiry date printed on your card. If expired, your balance is still safe — call 1-855-288-0926 to get a free replacement card with your remaining balance transferred.
